Muammar Gaddafi - Libyan leader

World leaders called on Libyan leader Muammar Gaddafi to step down as the country descended further into chaos and neared civil war.

The United Nations has confirmed some 100,000 people have fled from the fighting and uncertainty that has already claimed the lives of more than 1000 people.

Libyan protestors continue to take control of the nation's cities, the latest being Az-Zawiyah just 50km from Tripoli. Gaddafi's 40 year regime seems to control only sections of the capital Tripoli and some bastions in the south.

But there are fears of more conflict if loyalists to the regime mount more action.
